- Designing Data-Intensive Applications The one I hand to anyone joining an inventory or fulfilment team.
- Database Internals For when you need to know why the storage engine is behaving that way.
- Database Systems: The Complete Book A textbook, and still the clearest account of query planning and transactions I know.
- Building Microservices: Designing Fine-Grained Systems Really a book about boundaries. Worth reading before you split anything.
- Operating System Concepts A college textbook that turned out to matter far more than I expected.
- Clean Code Worth reading early, and worth arguing with later.
- System Design Interview Good for the interview, and a fair checklist afterwards.
Outside engineering
- Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind Changed how I think about why large organisations believe things.
- Zero to One Most useful for the questions it insists you answer.
- Atomic Habits The systems-over-goals argument, applied to people.
- The 5 AM Club Overwritten, and the core habit stuck anyway.
